Earth Healing Day, the United Religions Initiative (URI) Europe community reflects on a simple but vital truth: caring for the Earth is inseparable from building peace, justice, and wellbeing for all living beings.

During the recent Earth Healing Interfaith Webinar, “Honoring the Rights of Nature,” participants from diverse places, traditions, and backgrounds came together to explore how humanity can move from seeing nature merely as a resource to recognising the Earth as a living community worthy of respect, protection, and restoration.

The gathering was guided by Lauren Van Ham, URI Earth Restoration Coordinator, who invited participants to consider both the spiritual and practical dimensions of Earth healing. The conversation encouraged people not only to reflect on their relationship with the natural world, but also to identify meaningful actions they can take—individually and collectively—to support restoration.

On Earth Healing Day, the United Religions Initiative (URI) Europe community reflects on a simple but vital truth: caring for the Earth is inseparable from building peace, justice, and wellbeing for all living beings.

The idea of the Rights of Nature challenges us to reconsider our responsibilities. Rivers, forests, animals, soil, and ecosystems sustain life, yet they are often harmed by pollution, extraction, habitat loss, and climate disruption. Recognising their rights calls for a deeper ethic of care: one that values the wellbeing of the whole Earth community, not only human needs.

Interfaith cooperation has an important role in this work. Across religious, spiritual, and cultural traditions, people share teachings about gratitude, stewardship, compassion, and responsibility toward the natural world. When these values are put into action, they can strengthen local communities and inspire practical responses to environmental challenges.

URI Europe is making the webinar resources available to support continued learning and action. Lauren Van Ham’s presentation is available to participants, and the Earth Restoration Conversation Guide can be found through the Center for Earth Ethics Reports page in four languages. The webinar recording is also available through the URI Europe YouTube channel.

Earth Healing Day is also an invitation to remain connected beyond a single event. Every local action—whether restoring a green space, reducing waste, protecting water, learning from Indigenous wisdom, advocating for environmental justice, or creating dialogue across communities—can contribute to a wider culture of peace and healing.

As URI observes Peace Month and the International Day of Peace, this message takes on even greater urgency. Peace is not only the absence of violence between people; it also includes a respectful and life-giving relationship with the Earth. Healing the planet requires cooperation, humility, courage, and a willingness to act together.

URI Europe looks forward to continuing this journey at the next Earth Healing Interfaith Webinar on 19 October at 17:00 CEST, which will explore “The Plight of Europe’s Indigenous Peoples.” The session will be led by Erena Rhose and Morgana Sythove of Cultural Heritage & Indigenous People Scandinavia/Nordic CHIPS CC and HIVE CC.

And we hope to stay connected beyond the webinars! You can meet and connect with members of our global community through the URI Connect App. If you are not yet part of URI and would like to become more involved, we warmly invite you to explore ways to join the URI community.

Together, we can honour the Earth not only in words, but through the choices and relationships that help sustain life for generations to come.
